And by this I mean taking pictures of my ouftirs and putting them on the internet, fashion blogging. I’ve had this blog for more than 10 years, and I promise I'm happier about it than I look in these photos.

So last week writing clothing love stories made me nostalgic, and that combined with re-finding my grey tie dye body con skirt in the back of my wardrobe made me want to recreate some of my first outfit posts. Plus some pictures more in my current style.

Then upon looking at said old pictures on this here blog, I realised that I took the original ones in 2013?! Now I am feeling real nostalgic.

There's usually some kind of review element and an emphasis on how many items bought/how much spent, such as a tiktok video proclaiming the creator spent $962 at Shein. This may all seem pretty innocent and fun on the surface, until you look a bit deeper into the fashion industry, how these clothes are made, and what happens to them after said creator is done with them.

Firstly because COVID has taken most of the last two year's pride events, and secondly because me? at a trans pride event? in London? A weird thought. But I went, I saw, I soaked in the atmosphere, and now I'm here to share some pictures and tell you how it felt to be there.

How it felt to be there? Well the overwhelming feeling was surreal, a lot of it because of the aforementioned reasons, it's been two years since I've been to a pride event in person, and at least 15 months since I've been in a large crowd (let alone 7,500 people marching through London). But along with surreal it was absolutely magical, being surrounded by so many outwardly trans and queer people, I wanted to drink the atmosphere, there was such a sense of relief, of community, of shared joy mixed in with a little bit of grief.

After the last 15 months of being very isolated from community, and of what feels like endless attacks on the trans people, being in that crowd of people all there for the same thing really put a lot of the transphobia we experience every day online into a bit of context, it felt so much smaller and less significant. Don't get me wrong it's still something that people shouldn't experience, and that needs to be addressed and actively fought against, but in this crowd of people I felt so much joy and fight to move forward that it made trans exclusionists just seem sad and petty in comparison. I felt like I could do anything I needed to be to be me, fearless. It's also a reminder of how important work online is, I saw so many people I follow and interact with online, and without that strong sense of community, allyship, and work that goes on online I don't think this march would've been this big.

I'll be honest, I was expecting a counter protest, but apart from a few anti-maskers shouting slurs and empty threats of violence at the very start of the day (such fun) I didn't see any counter or negativity. The anti-makers also held up the start of the march but once we got started there was no stopping us... apart from when the samba band stopped for people to dance.

This pride was truly a protest, continuing as it started, of more than 7,000 trans people and allies marching through the streets of London to say enough is enough, to demand better for ourselves and each other. All the researching and writing energy I usually put into this space is spent writing reports for my degree, hence the silence. But I have something a little different today, which I hope you like.

To be honest I debated whether to post this little set of reviews on this space at all, as it is very much about environmentalism more than personal things, but it is about personal things in many ways, it is about justice and opening horizons and learning things and I have no other place to put this blog post so here it sits. Also I asked people on twitter and they said yes so blame them.

This has raised outrage from environmentalists and many questions from people, including me. So let's talk about this proposed coal mine.

I think anyone with a basic working knowledge of global warming and the climate crisis knows that (despite the fact that coal is a very useful material) when it comes to the environment, the health of people, and our future on this planet... coal is better kept in the ground. So why is a brand new coal mine potentially being built in the UK?

I saw many people I follow live tweeting about it, there have been lots of articles talking about how irresponsible it was, and I also sat my way though all 4 episodes and so I have many things to say about it. I have put off writing this post because the amount of hours I have already put into the video and watching the show was painful enough,. Then Youtube's copyright system got in the way of my video, but I am a finisher so here we are.

In this post I will be breaking the show down by topic, talking about all the problems I have with this show, and ultimately why it shouldn't have been made, if you want an episode by episode run down then I recommend my video which tackles things from that angle.

The general premise of this show was to tell us all about how things happen at Missguided, well, at the Missguided head office in Manchester, empire of Fast Fashion, and "girl power". A bit like In The Style's Breaking Fashion. But with it being a fast fashion brand essentially talking about themselves and me being an ethical and sustainable fashion blogger there are many red flags in this show... and I have a lot to say about it!

It's no secret that sustainable and ethical fashion, just like regular fashion, has a sizing issue. Despite the fact that the average size in the UK is a 16 most brands only bother catering from a 6-14, maybe a bit more if you're lucky. And in a world where we're trying to make sustainable fashion something that is accessible, this is not good enough.

I'm always an advocate for the fact that we can't just buy our way to sustainability but the fact also remains that people need clothes. And size should not be a barrier to people buying clothes they love, that are also sustainably and ethically made.

I made a post a little while ago about plus size ethical and sustainable fashion brands, which went down well, but a lot of my pals in the UK were asking if I could find some more UK based brands as so here we are! There's nothing worse than finding a piece you absolutely love and then realising that the store ships from the US (not that sustainable) and that shipping is really expensive, plus it's good to support local and so here are 16+ size inclusive sustainable and ethical brands that are also based here in the UK, some good ol' British brands. And because it's me we have to have brands full of colour and fun. I also had feedback that people liked that I included size ranges in the last one so they're there too!

So a few months back I made a post and video all about Lost Stock box, what it was, why it existed, and why I was a bit sceptical about it (though hopeful for its potential). Well, it's been a few months now and people have started to receive the first batch of boxes and... it's not going well. So today we're talking about that, and the ethics and sustainability of it all, because that's what we do on this blog.

If you're not sure what the Lost Stock Box is, I have a full rundown here, but basically Lost stock buy cancelled orders from factories, and donate money from sold boxes to the SAJIDA foundation helping garment workers in Bangladesh. The consumer get's "£70 of clothing for £35" and it keeps clothes out of landfill. Seems great!

Now I know many people before wanted me to buy and review a box, but after much deliberation I decided I really didn't need the clothes and decided instead to donate directly to SAJIDA along with some other organisations and charities directly helping garment workers. And boy am I glad I did, this has not gone to plan.

Let's start with the good
In my search through twitter for people's opinions on their boxes I did find people that were happy, happy to get some summery clothes and help a good cause in the mean time, and I am happy for them! They wanted airy, light, summery clothes and that's what they got.

But a lot of people were not so happy.
Besma is a friend of mine who runs a blog talking sustainable living and fashion. She ordered her box in early march and received it last week (early August). Her preferences were
Size: Small, Age: 25-30, Colours: Neutrals, Pattern: None, Fit + Style: Regular.

She received, a white vest top that was practically see through, a teal strap top, a linen green strap top, and a patterned A-Line dress. She only really liked the linen top, and was unhappy that the clothes didn't fit her size preferences, plus she said she wanted plain items and received something patterned

She also stated that she's worried that if 112,000+ other people who ordered a box also didn't like 3/4 items this could mean things just end up in Landfill, which I am with her on.
Elly wrote a breif review on her Twitter, mainly focused on the fact that the labels had been taken out, taking accountability away from brands involvesd.
She recieved the same see through vest top and a-line dres as Besma, as well as .... She liked the dress (it's definitely her style) and... She was annoyed because she found the Yellow top
Aly asked for darks in her box, and this is not what she received the same white vest top that Besma and Ely did, the same yellow Matalan top that Ellly did, a white cami, and a red slip dress which was apparently basically see through.

Aly was disappointed for many reasons: because the clothes were thin, and not something she would chose to wear, didn't fit her preference, and were also not worth the £70 advertised. She also went on to point out the guilt tripping on the returns policy, and Lost Stock trying to secure their bottom line, which I will get into in a little bit.

RRP £70?
There are a LOT of people on social media talking about how they're not happy with their package, in the first couple of batches everyone seems to have received a few of the same twenty or so items, all of which are pretty low quality, a fair few of which are from Matalan, most of which are not worth the £70 for all the items.

Gemma on twitter found all of the items from her box on the Matalan website, worth £33.50, which is less than she actually paid for the box, and that she recommends donating money straight to charity; especially as only £10 from the box goes to the garment workers.

I've seen several people saying they wish they'd just sent money straight to charity, rather than buying a box, and honestly I can't blame them.

Refunds?
Due to this mess, and a lot of people getting clothes they're simply never going to wear, they've been looking for refunds... but Lost Stock are very quick to try to guilt trip people out of getting them. When you first see anything about refunds it says:

Wait so Lost Stock market this as a wonder product, of guilt free, sustainable, shopping but now they haven't delivered what was promised and people want a refund it's "time to consider the environment'? I mean yes, the culture around returns as a whole does need to shift but this is you trying to absolve responsibility for the fact you haven't delivered on your promise.

Then when you get further into looking for a refund they say:

Yet more guilt tripping, yet when I look further it turns out:

So they money for the SAJIDA Foundation has already gone, you can't get that back, the only thing you will get refunded is the money that went directly to lost stock. They're guilt tripping you to protect their bottom line, not their NGO. So wrong.

Lost stock are responding to all tweets saying they'll try and sort things out with customers but still.

Image: Remake Our World

Accountability
Now, I understand why everyone is annoyed at lost stock, I truly do, that marketed promises that they couldn't keep and now they're trying to guilt trip people into not returning clothes. But I think a lot of the energy is going into calling lost stock box out and I see none of it going to brands like Matalan who's clothes are actually in the boxes.

Brands like Matalan, Topshop, Primark, are the reason these boxes exist in the first place. They decided they didn't want to pay their suppliers and essentially left already vulnerable garment workers for dead, no protection from COVID, no money to pay for food or rent. And with the labels being taken out of the clothes most of these brands completely dodge responsibility.

So as consumers I think it's important to keep holding the brands accountable, by joining campaigns like #PayUp, and boycotting fast fashion wherever possible. They caused this.

Sustainability
As I said earlier, this box was touted as guilt free shopping, sustainable, a way to keep clothing out of landfill and support garment workers. But now that thousands of people are receiving clothes they definitely didn't want? How much of that is going to end up in landfill, just with a few more air miles?

This was always going to be something of an issue with a mystery box, but Lost Stock asking people what their preferences for clothing were made it seem like this would at least be slightly mitigated. But no, with thousands of the same pieces of clothing ending up in hands that don't want them, they're going to be dumped into charity shops where they won't all get sold (especially if these charity shops are getting a lot of the same items) and will probably end up in a landfill in Ghana or some other country in the global south after being send there as a "charitable donation". Still in Landfill, it's just taken longer to get there.

You as a consumer (though I hate that this again puts the responsibility on the consumer to clean up this mess) can, instead of donating clothes straight to charity shops, swap them with friends or an online swapping service, or find a way to up-cycle them before considering charity shopping them; especially if they're low quality

Also, on an aside cause I know this is industry standard but: SO. MUCH. PLASTIC!

What can you do now?
Whether or not you've ordered a box, there are things you can do to try and minimise this mess, and to try and make sure something like this does not happen again:

Basically, this turned into a mess, I was already sceptical about it when I talked in my last post, but hoped for the best. This was not the best. I am happy to see that Lost Stock are now starting to answer people's questions, but I still have a lot of questions and would like to see more concrete transparency from them going forward.
Who Made my Pride Merch? I did! And today I'm going to teach you how you can too.

So there's a little bit of a story around this particular t-shirt, I do burlesque in my free time and last year I couldn't find any pride t-shirts I really loved that were also ethically made. So I decided to make one, I painted Tassel Twirling Queer on the back and temporarily stuck some rainbow tassels on the front. This was very much temporary and didn't last even the whole of a day at Pride Cymru, but I wasn't going to stick these tassels onto the top permanently because they were nice, expensive, and I used them for burlesque.

Fast forward to this year and I've been learning to embroider, and then remembered I had this t shirt and was like... why don't I just embroider the tassels on it? And here we are, I made it! And I'm going to share with you how to make it too. It's quite easy, but does take a while to make (though you can just sit in front of the TV and sew)
As you're probably already aware of, it's pride month! And you may have already seen my "Who Made My Pride Merch?" campaign which is asking all those big brands capitalising off of queer people whilst not making things ethically who is actually making their clothes, and how they're going to do better to protect LGBTQ+ people in their supply chains. With this campaign running I have had a lot of people ask me for queer ethical brands to shop with, for both pride merch and general every day stuff that's more inclusive and so here we are!

No you don't have to support unethical brands like Primark, H&M, and boohoo to get your pride merch fix this month (and beyond) and you can instead support queer owned brands and give your money to small, ethical businesses owners, rather than billionaires!

Now the niche of "Queer owned, ethical, and sustainable" is quite a tight one and so all of the brands on this list are ethically made, most are queer/LGBTQ+ owned, and a lot are sustainable in one shape or form. And I will discuss these things under each brand! There's everything from pride tees, to art pieces, underwear, jewellery and makeup.

I've also made sure to include Black and POC owned brands but this list is still lacking in that way so any suggestions are welcome!

I think most people on the internet are aware of the happenings with Black Lives Matter over the past couple of weeks. It's apparently the biggest civil rights movement in history, which is amazing, but along with a lot of the good coming out of communities coming together to stand for Black Lives and Black people there's an awful lot of perforative allyship going on.

If you're not sure what performative allyship, it's essentially saying you're an ally, and saying some of the right words, without doing any of the work to make a difference. And many brands have fallen into this in the last week or so when they've been called on to say something in solidarity with Black people.
I'm sure by now many of you have probably heard of Lost Stock Box, when it was released a few weeks ago I had a message from my friend Mischa asking me if I'd seen it and what I thought about it, the next day it was all over my time line. Since then it's been featured in top magazines, and has sold in its thousands.

But I still want to talk about it, because I'm someone who has been talking about ethical and sustainable fashion for a long time and I want to look into it from that perspective, both the good and the bad.

So stick around to read that, oh no I'm not just going to be singing this box's praises because I have some things to say about its parent company Mallzee too.

Today we're going to give something a go that I've wanted to try for a very long time, and that is natural dyeing! I originally wanted to trying dyeing a white dress of mine with some white onion skins but trying to accumulate enough onion skins to dye a very heavy denim dress without them all going mouldy first... well I haven't managed it yet!

But I've recently gotten really into embroidery and wanted to make a piece that involved sewing on some purple tulle. One problem, I didn't own any bright lilac tulle, just some that was slightly pink so here comes the red cabbage! A magical colour changing dye!
You may have seen that last week I posted a review of a camera I made. I's had the Lomo Konstruktor kit sitting in my cupboard for years and finally go around to making it, and in that post I promised photos, well that's what we're here for today!

All of these photos were taken on my Lomo Konstruktor, made my me, and developed at home. A very DIY affair. There were lots of overlaps due to a fix on the winding mechanism on this camera, leading to some pretty interesting shots. Overall it was a lot of fun so here today I present you with the photos I took on that camera during a daily walk in lockdown. Enjoy!

P.S there's also a video I made documenting this that I recommend watching!
So lots of people have been getting on with things they've always wanted to do in lockdown, if they have the time to, and I have had a Lomo Konstructor camera sat in my cupboard for about 4 years now, I kept meaning to get it out and film making it and it just never happened... until now!

You can watch the video below for a look at me building the thing, but in this blog post I'm going to be giving my review of the kit and it's function, so enjoy!
H&M have done some things recently, some questionable things, and if you're not well into the sustainable fashion world (or just in a slightly different part of it) you probably wouldn't have heard about their behaviour. It basically involved them claiming they were the "most transparent brand in the world" after fashion revolution released their transparency index which they are not, not at all. So in this post I am going to talk through exactly what happened and why they're definitely not the most transparent brand in the world.

One of the posts on my site with the highest page views is a review I did about 8 years ago from the brand Pretty Little Thing,(prettylittlething.com) it ranks quite high on google and gets a steady flow of clicks each month. It also really clashes with my blog style and ethics now and I've been ignoring it for a while. I did think about just deleting it. But instead I thought it would be better to put a disclaimer at the top and bottom of this post stating that pretty little thing is not ethical and sustainable and giving people a place to read more about the brand, so that perhaps I can encourage people to learn more about the company before considering buying.

If I can get a few people of the 50 a week that click on it to maybe think about looking into sustainable and ethical fashion, or even just questioning who is making their clothes and whats in them, that's a win. So this page is a resource as to why you probably shouldn't buy from PLT if you care about the environment or people.
It's the end of fashion revolution week! I know I can't believe it's over, this week has been incredible. I've put a lot of work into these blog posts and videos and really challenged myself, people have gotten involved. It's been awesome, thank you to everyone who has taken part! I hope you have learned something, been inspired!
